TMJ Q & A

               What are TMJ disorders?

TMJ disorders are disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which you can find in front of your ears on each side of your head. The TMJ connects your jawbone to your skull, and acts like a sliding hinge.

TMJ disorders present symptoms like:

  • Jaw tenderness or pain
  • Aching pain in and/or around your ear
  • Facial aching
  • Pain while chewing
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Pain in one or both TMJs
  • Locking of the joint when you move your jaw
  • Trouble opening or closing your mouth
  • Chronic headaches

If you have a TMJ disorder, you may also notice that when you open your mouth or chew, you hear a clicking sound or experience a grating sensation.

Typically, you can treat TMJ disorders with over-the-counter or prescription medications, muscle relaxants, or physical therapy. Sometimes, you can find relief with bite correction from Invisalign®.

Where can I find relief for TMJ disorders?
