Dentures Q & A

               What are dentures?

Dentures are removable sets of custom-made artificial teeth. Once you adjust to them, you’ll find that modern dentures are comfortable, durable, and natural-looking.

Dentures allow you to replace some or all of your teeth. To fit your needs, Austin K. Brown, DDS offers partial dentures and full dentures:

Partial dentures

Partial dentures replace one or some of your teeth, but not all of them. They feature a metal skeleton covered by a gum-colored acrylic base and clasps. The acrylic base holds your artificial teeth, and the clasps adhere your dentures to your natural teeth.

Sometimes, partial dentures anchor to crowns or dental implants instead of natural teeth.

Full dentures

Full dentures are like partial dentures, but they replace a complete set of teeth in the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both jaws.

Should you get dentures?

If you’re missing some or all of your teeth, or your teeth are badly damaged, dentures might be the right choice for you. They offer you a myriad of advantages, including the restoration of your:

  • Facial volume
  • Ability to speak properly
  • Safe and easy chewing

On top of all of this, dentures restore the beauty of your smile, and your confidence.

How do you take care of dentures?

To make sure your dentures last and function well for as long as possible, follow a few simple key steps. These include:

Brush

Treat your dentures like real teeth, and take them out every night to brush them thoroughly with a toothbrush. This prevents bacteria and plaque from forming on your dentures, and helps keep stains at bay.

Moisten

It’s important that you don’t let your dentures dry out. So, whenever you’re not wearing them, soak them either in plain water or a denture-cleaning solution. If you choose water, make sure it’s not hot, as heat can warp your dentures.

Clean your mouth

In addition to cleaning your dentures, make sure to clean your mouth every day. Before putting in your dentures in the morning, brush your gums, tongue, and palate with a soft toothbrush. This not only stops bacteria from taking hold, but it also stimulates circulation in your mouth tissue.

Schedule regular maintenance visits

Finally, make sure your dentures are still working well and that your oral health is good by booking regular visits with the team for denture maintenance.

If you ever feel like your dentures are no longer fitting correctly, never try to adjust them yourself. This could result in irreparable damage to your dentures. Instead, come in to Dr. Brown to get them fixed.
